This mountain landscape is defined by the high engineering of the Clinchfield railroad, which utilizes a complex series of tunnels including the Upper Pine Tunnel, Lower Pine Tunnel, and the distinctive looping track known as The Loop. These rails snake through the gaps alongside the Blue Ridge Parkway, which follows the crest of the ridge past Sandy Gap and Lynn Gap.
