About this map

Stratton Mountain and the high ridges of the Green Mountain range anchor this late 19th-century survey of Windham County. The landscape is defined by the narrow river valleys of the Winhall River and Ball Mountain Brook, where small manufacturing and timber-dependent settlements like Bondville, Rawsonville, and Bucketville are clustered. The transportation network is dominated by the West Vermont Central RR and the Brattleboro and Whitehall Branch, which follow the winding course of the West River through South Londonderry and Jamaica. This period represents the height of the upland rail economy before the consolidation of these smaller branch lines. Topographer G.E. Hyde's mapping of the southern Vermont highlands captures the isolation of high-altitude ponds such as Stratton Pond and Grout Pond, providing a detailed look at the township boundaries of Winhall, Stratton, and Wardsboro as they existed before 20th-century road developments.
