South Mountain Park dominates the northern half of this landscape, its interior terrain punctuated by numerous Prospects and the Alta Trail. Along the park's northern fringe, institutional and recreational sites like the Phoenix Police Academy, Pistol Range, and South Mountain Speedway indicate the post-war development of the area. To the south, the terrain transitions into the Gila River Indian Reservation, where the Gila River flows through a broad alluvial plain.
