The Little Missouri River carves a winding path through the heart of this Badlands landscape, defining the topography of McKenzie County in the early 21st century. Much of the territory is protected within the Little Missouri National Grassland, with a small northwestern portion belonging to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The survey illustrates a stark, high-relief terrain punctuated by prominent high points such as Morman Butte, Square Top, and the eponymous Lone Butte in the southeast.
