Mapleton serves as the central hub for this corner of Monona County, situated where the broad valley of the Maple River meets a network of tributary streams. The town's layout is clearly defined by its residential grid, containing the Mapleton Post Office and providing access to the Mapleton Municipal Airport just to the north. Outside the municipal limits, the landscape transitions into a systematic grid of agricultural roads, including Co Hwy L32 and various avenues named for trees and western ranges, such as Redwood Ave and Ozark Ave.
