Bonanza Mine and the Mother Lode Mine sit high upon the western slopes of Bonanza Ridge, marking the industrial footprint of this copper-rich region. The drainage patterns follow the steep descent of McCarthy Creek and Bonanza Creek as they flow toward the south, while the northern and western reaches are dominated by massive ice features including the Regal Glacier, West Fork Glacier, and the dramatic Stairway Icefall.

This 1950s-era landscape, captured before the establishment of the modern wilderness designation, shows the proximity of mining activity to the terminal moraines of Root Glacier. Evidence of human presence and access is concentrated along the river valleys and high ridges, where a Landing Strip and isolated Cabin provided essential infrastructure for the remote operations near Nizina Mtn and the broad Nizina River.
