About this map

The National Petroleum Reserve In Alaska covers the northern half of this terrain, meeting the Noatak National Preserve and the designated Noatak Wilderness to the south. This remote landscape in the North Slope Borough is defined by its massive drainage systems and prominent peaks, including the Sphinx Mountains in the east and Tupik Mountain centrally located. The map records a vast, roadless expanse where the Utukok River and Adventure Creek flow through the northern foothills, while the southern reaches fall toward the Kugururok River valley. A significant geographical transition occurs at Nachralik Pass, providing a natural corridor between the headwaters of Tupik Creek and Kogruk Creek. These federally managed lands represent a wilderness area preserved just a few years after the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.
