1953 Map of Mt. Brynion

About this map

Mt Brynion anchors this topographic study of the Washington landscape during the early 1950s, a period defined by active timber extraction and riverside infrastructure. The Coweman River winds through the southern half of the quadrangle, where a Gaging Sta and Cable Crossing indicate the importance of water monitoring. The presence of a Private Railroad and numerous Logging Roads throughout the northern drainage of Ostrander Creek reflects the industrial character of the era. To the west, the residential and street grid begins to emerge along Harris St and Allen St, while a Footbridge provides a pedestrian crossing over the river. The topography transitions from the alluvial bottomlands of Rose Valley to the steep, wooded ridges of the uplands, where a Tunnel and logging Headquarters mark the operations of the local timber economy.
