New Freeport and Aleppo anchor this study of Greene County’s southwestern highlands, where a network of winding ridges and deep hollows dictates the path of every road and creek. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of the Pennsylvania Fork Fish Cr and the various forks of Dunkard Creek, including South Fork Dunkard Fork and N Fork Dunkard Fork. Family history is preserved in numerous upland burial grounds, including Schess Cem, Staggers Cem, and Dunkard Cem. The intricate road system, following the contours of Mt Carmel Ridge and traversing gaps like Windy Gap, connects disparate rural communities such as Nettle Hill and Bristoria.
