1892 Map of New Haven

USGS Topo · Published 1902

About this map

The urban core of New Haven Harbor and its surrounding coastal and inland townships are captured here at the turn of the century. The landscape is defined by the sharp vertical relief of the West Rock Ridge and its sister traprock formations at East Rock and Mt. Carmel, where the rugged topography forced settlement and transportation into the narrow valleys of the Mill River and Quinnipiac River. A dense network of rail lines, including the Northampton Div. and the Shore Line Div., radiate from the city center, connecting industrial outposts like Whitneyville and Augerville to the primary harbor.
