About this map

The Noatak River dominates this mid-century survey, winding through a complex system of waterways and alluvial flats in Northwest Alaska. Surveyed in the early 1950s, the landscape is defined by the braided confluence of the Eli River and the massive Aliktongnak Lake. A seasonal Winter Trail provides the primary overland connection across the tundra, tracing a path south of the Sevisok Slough toward the higher ground of the Igichuk Hills. This map documents a critical period of transition as the Army Map Service utilized 1952 aerial photography to chart this remote terrain. While the geography appears largely unsettled, isolated Cabins and a singular Cabin along the riverbanks indicate the presence of seasonal subsistence camps and trapper outposts essential to the local river economy.
