The Nulato Hills dominate the landscape of this Interior Alaska region, characterized by complex topographic contours that define the western reaches of the Yukon River watershed. The Gisasa River meanders through the southern and eastern portions of the quadrangle, carving a drainage path through the elevations of the hills. This 2017 survey illustrates a largely unpopulated wilderness within the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, where the terrain is governed by the Public Land Survey System grids of t9s r4w and t9s r3w. The map serves as a primary record of the hydrological network and elevation gradients in this remote part of the subarctic, showing the various forks and tributaries that feed the main river system.
