About this map

Galena Air Force Base and its accompanying Auxiliary Field dominate the northern landscape of this interior Alaska survey, established as a strategic military outpost along the Yukon River. The settlement of Galena sits adjacent to the base, bordered by a large military reservation boundary. The river here is a complex network of braids and side channels, including the sweeping Kala Slough and Louden Slough, which isolate large landmasses like Fish Island. Downriver from the base, the landscape reveals traces of earlier habitation at Louden (Aban'd), where a Cem remains near the riverbank. Dramatic topographical features such as Cave Off Cliffs and Bear Bluff overlook the water, while various Cabins and an Airstrip indicate the remote seasonal use of the surrounding wilderness.
