The Yukon River dominates this interior landscape, weaving through a complex network of wetlands and channels defined by Nulato Island and Ninemile Island. The settlement of Nulato sits on the western bank near the confluence of the South Fork Nulato River, marked by essential infrastructure including a Radio Tower, an Airstrip, and a local Cem. Outside the village, the human footprint is characterized by seasonal or subsistence activity, indicated by several Fishing Cabins and Ninemile Camp scattered along the riverbanks.

Evidence of historical regional communication is visible in the Telegraph Line Abandoned that skirts the hills to the west. The terrain transitions from the low-lying marshlands of Mukluk Slough and Kaiyuh Slough to the rising elevations of the Nulato hills.
