About this map

The Little Missouri National Grassland dominates the southwestern corner of this landscape, where the broken terrain of western North Dakota defines the drainage patterns between McKenzie and Dunn counties. Prominent topographic ridges such as Eisenhower Divide, Bonnie Divide, and Dillinger Divide carve the earth into a complex network of coulees and gulches. These divides separate the headwaters of numerous seasonal streams, including Lone Butte Cr, Whitetail Cr, and Petes Cr. The area is largely defined by its natural topography rather than dense settlement, with only intermittent section roads like 1st ST SW and 2nd ST SW providing access through the various draws. Named landmarks such as Oak Gulch and Hay Coulee reflect the early local naming conventions used to navigate this intricate system of ridges and creek beds.
