About this map

The Rio Grande carves a sharp path along the United States Mexico Boundary Line in this late nineteenth-century documentation of the Big Bend region. The landscape is defined by the heavy dissection of canyon systems draining toward the river, including Bofecillos Canyon, Burros Canyon, and Rancherios Canyon. Settlement at this time is sparse, centered on isolated ranching outposts and small riverside clusters such as Polvo and Mulato.
