About this map

The Yakima River carves a deep path through the desert landscape between Umtanum Ridge and Yakima Ridge in this early 1950s Army Map Service survey. The arrival of large-scale water management is evident throughout the valley, anchored by the Roza Dam and the complex routes of the Roza Canal and Selah Moxee Irrigation Canal. These engineering feats allowed agriculture to take root alongside the Northern Pacific railroad line, which services the small settlements of Pomona, East Selah, and Hillside Siding.
