The Black River valley dominates this landscape, serving as a corridor for industrial development and transportation during the early twentieth century. Two major rail lines, the New York Central and Hudson River RR and the Glenfield and Western RR, trace the terrain, supporting timber and manufacturing hubs like Lyons Falls and Glenfield. At Lyons Falls, the confluence of the Moose River and the Black River created a natural center for milling and power, evidenced by nearby Goulds Mill and Kosterville. To the west, the topography rises sharply toward the Tug Hill plateau, marked by the dramatic incision of Whetstone Gulf and the New York Central and Hudson River RR line at Gulfhead Sta. This survey, conducted by J.H. Jennings and his team, also captures established upland villages like Constableville and Turin alongside leisure destinations like Brantingham Lake.
