Riverdale and Strickland anchor this 2019 study of the Michigan interior where Gratiot, Montcalm, and Isabella counties meet. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the Pine River and its numerous tributaries, including the Lyman Br and the curiously named Backache Bend. The region is a mosaic of wetlands and small lakes, such as Half Moon Lake and Lyons Lake, which provided the framework for the local agricultural and drainage networks visible in the numerous labeled drains like Figg Drain and Bass Lake Drain.
