The alluvial landscape of the Mississippi Delta in northwestern Mississippi is defined here by the Mississippi River and the massive St Francis Levee. Large river features like Buck Island No 53 and the Buck Island Bar dominate the waterway, while the inland terrain is a network of slow-moving bayous and relic river channels. The settlement pattern follows the Illinois Central Gulf railroad, which links the small communities of Penton, Clack, Robinsonville, and Bowdre.
