The low-lying Isthmus of Manchac is captured here in the late 1960s, a narrow strip of wetlands squeezed between Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain. The landscape is dominated by a complex network of waterways, including Bayou Black and Bayou Desert, which reveal the hydrologic character of St. John the Baptist Parish before major modern alterations. The small settlement of Ruddock sits along the Illinois Central railroad, a vital transportation artery through the swamp that is accompanied by the Illinois Central Jeep Trail.
