About this map

The Southern Pacific railroad hugs the Gaviota Coast, connecting a string of remote coastal sidings and ranching outposts at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains. In this mid-century landscape, the transition from the high ridges of Nuestra Senora Del Refugio to the Pacific Ocean is defined by a dense series of steep canyons, or cañadas. Local transportation and settlement are concentrated on the narrow marine terrace, where small locales like Sacate, Drake, and Gato serve as points of interest along the rail line.
