About this map

Santa Ynez Mountains define the northern horizon of this coastal survey, where the steep terrain of Nuestra Señora Del Refugio drops sharply toward the Pacific Ocean. The narrow coastal strip is dominated by the Southern Pacific railroad line, which connects several small stations and ranch stops along the bluff, including Gato, San Augustine, and Drake. The drainage pattern is exceptionally detailed, showing numerous steep canyons known as cañadas that carve through the foothills, such as Cañada de Santa Anita and Cañada de Sacate.
