About this map

The rocky headlands and coastal inlets of Little Compton and Middletown dominate this late 19th-century coastal survey. Near the mouth of the Sakonnet River, the landscape is defined by exposed geological features and maritime landmarks such as Sakonnet Point, West Island, and the dangerous Cormorant Rock. A substantial breakwater protects the anchorage near the southern tip of the peninsula, reflecting the area's maritime importance before modern development transformed much of the shoreline.
