The Salinas city grid and the surrounding agricultural valleys are preserved here during the early twentieth century, showing a landscape still heavily defined by Mexican land grant boundaries such as Nacional, Llano de Buena Vista, and Rincon del Zanjon. The Salinas River and its accompanying sloughs wind through the valley floor, supporting settlements like the sugar-beet hub of Spreckels and the junction at Confederate Corners.

Infrastructure of the era is prominent, including the Southern Pacific R R and the Pajaro Valley Consolidated R R, which facilitated the region's transition to an industrial farming powerhouse. Beyond the fields, the terrain rises into the Sierra de Salinas and Cienega del Gabilan, where localized landmarks like Hartnell College and numerous rural schools—including Blanco School and Somavia School—mark the social heart of these outlying ranchos and neighborhoods.
