The San Bernardino valley at the close of the nineteenth century was a landscape defined by emerging rail networks and systematic water management. Surveyed in the 1890s, this area shows the early footprints of Colton, Rialto, and Bloomington laid out in the characteristic grid of early citrus-belt development. Significant infrastructure like the Gage Canal and the San Bernardino and Riverside Motor Line illustrate the region's rapid transition into a powerhouse of agriculture and transportation.

To the north, the terrain rises sharply into the San Bernardino National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains.
