Taliesin West, the winter home and school of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, sits at the base of the McDowell Mts, overlooking a landscape in transition. During the mid-1960s, the desert floor of Paradise Valley and the northern reaches of Scottsdale were beginning to see the suburban infrastructure of the Phoenix metropolitan area expand northward. Significant arterial roads like Shea Boulevard, Cactus Road, and Alma School Road establish the grid that would soon define this region.
