The Missouri River carves a deep valley through this portion of Morton and Burleigh counties, creating distinct lowlands such as Schmidt Bottom and Apple Creek Bottom. On the western bluffs, the small settlement of Schmidt overlooks the river's path, while the eastern banks are marked by the extensive grounds of the Annunciation Monastery and its associated Annunciation Monastery Cem. The hydrology is defined by the expansive Lake Oahe, where the Little Heart River and Apple Creek converge with the main Missouri channel.
