The Schell Creek Range dominates this portion of the Humboldt National Forest, rising to high elevations at South Schell Peak and Taft Peak. The landscape is characterized by deep drainage systems and steep topography, where numerous seasonal and perennial water sources like McCoy Creek and Cleve Creek flow toward the lower elevations of Spring Valley to the east.

Evidence of early exploration and resource management appears in the form of a Prospect located near O'Toole Creek and an aqueduct segment in the northeast corner. Access through this wilderness in the early 1980s was limited to a network of 4WD tracks and a pack trail through Taft Canyon, reflecting the area's isolation. Local landmarks such as Black Mtn and Vipoint serve as key orientation points for the various forks of Stephens Creek and Indian Creek.
