Spearfish serves as the focal point of this 1961 survey, situated at the edge of the Black Hills National Forest. The town's institutional character is evident through the campus of the Black Hills Teachers College, a High Sch, and the Home for the Aged. North of the town center, the Black Hills Airport and a Drive-in Theater along the Centennial Prairie reflect the mid-century expansion of local transportation and leisure infrastructure.

Numerous named gulches such as Rubicon Gulch, Burno Gulch, and Blacktail Gulch carve through the terrain, leading toward the small settlement of Maitland.
