The Little Colorado River and its tributaries, including the Zuni River and Puerco River, dictate the placement of ranching outposts and small villages like Springerville and Concho.

Evidence of the region's developing infrastructure appears in the far northwest with the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad and the historic Mexican Crossing. The map highlights the geological uniqueness of the area, featuring the Petrified Forest and a series of unusual landforms such as the Natural Bridge, the deep canyon of Milky Hollow, and numerous Sinks east of the river. To the south, the topography rises sharply toward Green Peak at the headwaters of the North Fork White River.
