About this map

The Umatilla National Forest dominates this landscape on the border of Columbia and Garfield counties. The terrain is defined by a series of high ridges, including Welch Ridge, Unfried Ridge, and the curiosly named Hard-to-get-to Ridge, which separate deep canyons carved by the Tucannon River and its various tributaries like Asotin Creek. This area was clearly managed for forest protection and recreation during the mid-20th century, evidenced by the Clearwater Guard Station, a Lookout Tower, and established sites such as Teal Spring Campground.
