The Brazos River meanders across this landscape, defining a region characterized by extensive agricultural activity and institutional land use in the early 1970s. The sprawling State Prison Farm dominates much of the central and eastern portions of the map, situated north of the river and south of the Southern Pacific tracks. This correctional presence is interwoven with established rural communities like Harlem and Booth, as well as small settlements along the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe line, including Crabb.

Local history is preserved in the numerous country churches and cemeteries that dot the interior, such as Mt Moriah Ch and Sandberry Cem. The river's influence is evident in the oxbow formations of Old River Lake and Horseshoe Lake, while the industrial expansion of Sugar Land appears in the northeast corner near Brooks Lake. To the south, the massive Smithers Lake serves as a major hydrological feature, flanked by Rabbs Bayou and the seasonal path of Dry Creek.
