The Sun Prairie Flats dominate the northwestern portion of this mid-1960s Montana landscape, where the open prairie gives way to a network of winding drainages. This survey captures the rural character of Phillips County at a time when the Department of the Interior was focused on the development of the Missouri River Basin. The small settlement of Sun Prairie serves as the focal point, supported by the local Sun Prairie Sch.

South and east of the flats, the terrain becomes increasingly complex as the land is carved by several major coulees and creeks. Waterways such as Telegraph Creek, Dog Creek, and Smith Creek create a rhythmic pattern of ridges and draws across the quadrangle. In the southern reaches, Box Elder Creek winds through the topography, illustrating the drainage systems that define this part of the Missouri River Basin upland.
