The Talkeetna Mountains dominate the eastern half of this 1952 topographic survey, where high-altitude survey markers like VABM 4559 Snowshoe and VABM 4157 Wolverine trace the crests of the range. The landscape is defined by its drainage patterns, particularly the westward-flowing Kashwitna River and its North Fork Kashwitna River. These glacial-fed waters cut through the terrain toward the lower elevations near Caswell Lake.

The western portion of the map transitions into more lowland features, including Montana Creek and Birch Creek. This area illustrates the transition from the high interior peaks to the drainage basins that define the Matanuska-Susitna region. Researchers can trace the early survey control points across the peaks, such as VABM 3757 Montana and VABM 2511 Sunshine, which provided the foundation for mapping this wilderness just after the 1949 aerial surveys.
