About this map

Grantley Harbor dominates the northern horizon of this coastal landscape on the Seward Peninsula, serving as the terminus for a complex network of freshwater drainages. The Bluestone River winds through the eastern portion of the sheet, eventually meeting the Kuksuk Channel as it flows toward the harbor. This terrain is defined by the high point of Dese Creek Dome, which sheds water into a dense pattern of named creeks, including Dese Cr, Quartz Cr, and Sodus Cr. The drainage patterns, particularly those of Lucky Strike Cr and Lucky Ditch Cr, reflect a landscape deeply carved by water. The distribution of these waterways, including the southern flows of Elizabeth Cr and Gold Cr, suggests a region where hydrology has historically dictated movement and seasonal land use. This 2017 study illustrates the topographical character of the Nome Census Area, where elevation and water systems are the primary geographical markers.
