The South Fork Salmon River and Salmon River carve through a landscape of high alpine basins and early mountain homesteads on the border of Siskiyou and Trinity counties. This 2001 revision illustrates the transition from riverfront settlements like Summerville and Petersburg Station to the interior wilds of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Evidence of 19th-century activity persists in labels for a mine, numerous prospects, and the solitary Prospect Grave.

Resource extraction and early habitation are marked by features such as Schoolhouse Flat and Moliter Cabin, while the terrain rises sharply toward the serrated profile of Sawtooth Ridge. Glacial features define the southern portion of the sheet, where Lois Lake, Grizzly Lake, and Sapphire Lake sit beneath the shadows of Caesar Peak and Thompson Peak. The presence of the Salmon River Weaverville Rd provides the primary historical access point into this high-elevation backcountry.
