West Valley Reservoir dominates this high-altitude landscape where the Modoc Co Lassen Co line meets an Indefinite Boundary at the foot of Tule Mountain. The rugged terrain is defined by the headwaters of the South Fork Pit River, flowing from the West Valley Dam through the timberlands of the Modoc National Forest. Transportation through these remote reaches is marked by the winding route of the Southern Pacific railroad, which skirts the western hills near a small Cem and several isolated water sources like Mud Lake.
