Upper Red Rock Lake anchors the northern extent of this 1980s provisional study, situated within the protected reaches of the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. The landscape is defined by the high-elevation crest of the Centennial Mountains, where the Continental Divide serves as the political boundary between Beaverhead County, Montana, and Clark County, Idaho. To the south, the terrain descends into the Targhee National Forest, drained by a network of waterways including Sheridan Creek and Taylor Creek.

Resource extraction and scientific land use are visible through several prospects and an Open Pit Mine located near Sheep Mountain. The presence of the US Sheep Experiment Station straddling the divide highlights the specialized agricultural research prevalent in this high-country environment. Recreational access is concentrated near the water at the Upper Lake Campground, while much of the remaining area is designated as the Red Rock Lakes Wilderness, characterized by a system of 4WD trails and remote canyons like Carrot Canyon.
