The Manistee National Forest defines the wooded landscape of this Michigan border region, where the northern edge of Newaygo County meets southern Lake County. The terrain is a network of small glacial lakes and streams, most notably Whipple Lake and the wetlands around Bristol Pond. For genealogists and local historians, several rural burial grounds are documented, including Pioneer Cem near the eastern boundary and Whipple Cem situated south of its namesake lake. The hydrology of the area is centered on the Middle Branch Pere Marquette River and the Little Pere Marquette River, which wind through the northern and western sections of the quadrangle. A system of section-line roads, such as Kings Hwy and State Rd, provides access through the forest and connects these remote water features and historical sites.
