Manistee National Forest encompasses much of this West Michigan landscape, where the headwaters of the Pere Marquette River system define the terrain. The hydrological network is the primary feature, dominated by the Middle Branch Pere Marquette River in the north and the Little South Branch Pere Marquette River to the south. Numerous smaller water bodies like Guard Lake, Toman Lake, and Whipple Lake are connected by seasonal drainages such as Pease Creek and McDuffee Creek.
