The Rio Grande defines the international boundary between the United States and Mexico in this mid-century survey of the Lower Valley. This reach of the river, southeast of El Paso, is a landscape shaped by a complex network of irrigation and drainage infrastructure, including the Franklin Canal, Riverside Canal, and numerous lateral branches like the Juan de Herrera Main Lateral. Settlement patterns follow the historic corridor of the Southern Pacific railroad and Alameda Avenue, connecting the established communities of Ysleta, Socorro, and Belen. Cultural landmarks such as Our Lady of the Valley Ch and Our Lady of Mt Carmel Cem reflect the area's deep heritage. Notable for labor history is the Bracero Reception Center, a critical site for the mid-20th-century migrant labor program located near the river and U S Customs.
