Shelikof Strait dominates the western half of this maritime landscape, where the waters of the Gulf of Alaska meet the rugged coastline of Kodiak Island. The shoreline is defined by prominent headlands, including the sharp rise of Steep Cape and the rocky protrusion of Cape Nuniliak further south. These coastal features provide essential navigational landmarks along a stretch of coast otherwise characterized by steep elevation gains directly from the tide line.
