Accotink Creek and Holmes Run define the wooded drainage basins of this mid-century Northern Virginia landscape, which is shown here in the midst of rapid suburban expansion. The map documents the extensive development of residential communities such as Baileys Crossroads, Seven Corners, and Merrifield, many of which grew around major transportation arteries like the Capital Beltway and the Shirley Memorial Highway.

Institutional and infrastructure growth is evident through numerous newly constructed schools like J E B Stuart High Sch and the campus of N Va Community College. The southern portion of the sheet remains dominated by large federal tracts, including the Fort Belvoir Military Reservation and the U S Coast Guard Reservation (Radio Station) near Hayfield. Along the Southern railroad line, historical industrial sites like Edsall Station and various Gravel Pits contrast with the modernizing residential suburbs of Springfield.
