Settlement is sparse, concentrated near the southern boundary along the Kobuk River drainage where Central and Klery Creek are noted. The presence of a Winter Trail and the Squirrel River Landing Strip highlights the era's reliance on seasonal ground transport and bush aviation for connecting isolated outposts. Numerous tributaries, such as the Salmon River and Kugrak River, create a dense network of waterways that served as primary corridors for movement through the Brooks Range foothills.
