The Mertie Mountains dominate the northeastern corner of this interior Alaskan landscape, which is defined by high ridgelines and the headwaters of several drainage systems. This 2018 survey documents the remote boundary between the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, a line that follows the natural height of land across the center of the quadrangle. The topography is deeply carved by watercourses, with Porcupine Cr flowing through the northwestern reaches and Slate Cr winding through the central and southern valleys. In the southwestern portion, Rock Cr cuts through the high terrain, illustrating the complex watershed patterns typical of this subarctic wilderness before any significant human infrastructure or road networks were established.
