Scare Mtn and the high plateaus of the Piceance Basin define this landscape along the border of Rio Blanco and Garfield counties. The terrain is deeply incised by complex drainage systems, including E Douglas Cr and its numerous tributaries such as Bear Park Cr and Carr Cr. These watercourses have carved dramatic features like Wildhorse Canyon, Slide Canyon, and the Left Fork Red Rock Canyon.
