Routt National Forest dominates this high-country survey along the boundary of Moffat and Routt counties. The landscape is defined by the prominent peaks of the Elkhead Mountains, including Buck Point and Black Mountain. In the late 1960s, this area served primarily as a managed wilderness and resource zone, evidenced by the presence of a Guard Sta near Lost Park and a designated Campground along Sawmill Creek.

A network of remote access points and seasonal paths, such as the Bears Ears (Pack) Trail, crisscrosses the high basins. These trails provide historical evidence of the pack-animal routes used for forest management and recreation before modern road development was fully realized in these upper elevations. Water drainage is a central feature of the terrain, with various branches of Slater Creek and the North Fork Elkhead Creek carving deep into the mountain slopes, punctuated by natural Falls in the northeast.
