About this map

The Desatoya Mountains dominate this high-desert terrain along the border of Churchill and Lander counties. In the late 1960s, this region remained a stark landscape of extraction and passage, defined by the presence of the Buffalo Hump Mine and the Highland Mine. Water sources were critical to the livestock and mining operations of the era, documented here by Buffalo Well, Little Buffalo Well, and the seasonal flow of Buffalo Creek. The topographic detail traces steep elevations rising toward Buffalo Mtn and Buffalo Summit, while a network of primitive routes and a Jeep Trail provide the only access through the winding geography of Skull Canyon and Buffalo Canyon. A lone Rest Area along the northern road signifies the isolation of this corridor in central Nevada.
