About this map

The Rio Grande valley and the rising peaks of the Franklin Mountains define this landscape along the West Texas and New Mexico border. In the mid-1990s, the irrigation network of the Vinton Lateral, Nemexas Drain, and Canutillo Lateral supported the agricultural bottomlands west of Interstate 10. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe RR runs parallel to the river, connecting the primary settlements of Anthony, Canutillo, and Borderland. A significant portion of the eastern terrain is protected within the Franklin Mountains State Park, featuring dramatic topography such as Hitt Canyon and the Aztec Caves. The presence of the La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution and numerous educational facilities like Anthony Jr-Sr High Sch and Canutillo High Sch reflect the institutional and residential growth occurring in the corridor between El Paso and Las Cruces during this era.
